Getting sound other than PC speakers to work!

Post by maxtape »

Hi guys,

Pretty excited to rediscover the joys of Keen games! This has probably been discussed a million times before but I can't find the threads on it. So can anyone tell me how to get the adlib/soundblaster sound to work on Goodbye Galaxy?

Thanks
Max

Managed to find this one from the old board: http://publiccommanderkeenforum.yuku.co ... sound.html On this board this is the first time this has been asked, I think. :) As there's said, it seems you need either VDMSound or DOSBox. I've never tried the first one myself, but DOSBox plays the sounds quite nicely.

Oh, and welcome, great to see another new member today or so!

If you choose to use Dosbox, be sure to get a nice frontend to start your games with. It can save lots of frustrating typing each time you want to play a game.

I like D.O.G. or D-Fend (or the newer Reloaded version of it.)
I think D-Fend Reloaded god the best compability with the latest Dosbox version ect.

I put a link to DOSBox in my 'Send To' menu, so that I could right-click -> Send To -> Run with DOSBox any Keen executable or mod batch file. It works good enough for me.

And welcome to the forums! :D

Another simple trick is to just put a shortcut to DOSBox on your desktop, and then drag an EXE you want to run onto that DOSBox shortcut.

Thanks a lot everyone. I'll give this DOSbox business a try. I'm pretty sure I can still sing along to the music on a few of the Goodbye Galaxy levels, amazing soundtrack!

A music section has just been started over at the KeenWiki, if you're interested:

http://www.shikadi.net/keenwiki/Category:Keen_Music

It will eventually have a link to download the music (currently at http://www.shikadi.net/wiki/files/keenmusic-r1.zip) so you can listen to the soundtrack in Winamp, XMMS, etc.

It's also got links to some of the Keen remixes, but since it's a new section it's a bit bare at the moment, so if anyone remembers any other remixes please add them!

Do I have to pay to use/get Dosbox? Because if I do, I won't bother

It's completely free, luckily. ;)

Heck, it's open source and the best thing out there to play DOS games on modern machines.

It's wierd...I've discovered that, although DOSBox plays the music perfectly for pretty much everything, a few songs sound different between DOSBox and my old computer.

It's probably the MIDI. I think every single sound card with MIDI on it has different samples :(
The Viking II lander actually did land on a 'rock' on Mars.

No, it's probably the fact that DOSBox's Adlib emulation isn't 100% accurate.
