Old fangames and Windows 7

Post by Toothpick »

Is there any way to get old fangames to work on Windows 7? I want to play Keen 2000 again, but I keep getting an error message telling me it's not compatible with Windows 7. Is there some kind of program similar to DosBox that allows you to play games that were made for older versions of Windows?

Windows XP Mode did not work on my computer. Are there modes for older versions of Windows that might work?

If Virtual PC didn't work, you could also try VirtualBox, QEMU or VMWare.

The most roundabout way of getting them to run is by installing Windows 3.1 in DOSBox. Galaxieretter had tweaked things so DOSBox would work best with Win 3.1, but I can't remember what happened to it.

You must first acquire the disc image for the Windows installer, then boot it from your virtual machine.

I have a Windows 98 virtual PC and it has served me quite well running a lot of old software and games.

Windows 3.1 was also very easy to install in DosBox.

Best thing about using DOSBox and 3.1 is that it's entirely portable.

I don't have my own copy of Windows 3.1 though. I guess I'll have to wait some other time to play Keen 2000, or at least watch someone else play it on YouTube.

Do you want one? I doubt if Microsoft care about piracy of pre-Windows 95 software...

I'll pass. I just played Keen 2000 via The Games Factory. I do not remember the game being so unplayable. I can't even get pass the second level because Keen sticks to the floor.

You mean it's not available on some torrent site?

MS only stopped selling licenses for 3.11 about 3 years ago!
It was used in retail.

If you want Windows 3.1, then look around and find one that suits your fancy. I'm not sure if it will play Keen 2000 though.

I'll just open up the games using The Games Factory. That works on my computer. I don't know why Keen gets stuck in the second level of Keen 2000 though. I'll go try out other fangames.
