And that for only 14 days of work! That is amazing. Too bad he didn't post better pictures.

I wonder what's going on with Dangerous Dave for smartphones. Any word on it?

Edit: It looks like Frederik Schreiber also found something:

Hey, it's the "Commander Keen Says.." sprite! Used to be for the overworld. That's cute.

Awesome! Fascinating to see how the world map first looked, and it seems they actually used that discarded title screen, too.

I tried asking Romero this question right after he posted, but he's probably busy and you guys probably know the answer: how many days did it take to make Keen 1, not including the Dangerous Dave dev period?

This is really cool. It's neat that after all these years, information still trickles out that we didn't know about. That the info sprite was originally used for the map is truly interesting. Looks like he just faced forward regardless of direction...?

Also, I guess they hadn't yet made a lower-right corner tile for the walls in this build.

Hmm this is quite interesting. Looks like the sprite at that point, moved tile by tile, instead of having the free movement we are used too.

In the anthology book, it is mentioned that it took 3 months
but, if this is 14 days in, then it started on: monday 24th september
and took them: 11 weeks and 4 days (81 days) till it ware released

It looks like a couple of the unused mountain texture tiles in Keen1 (9th and 11th across, 3rd row in 1til0000.bmp) was derived from the mountain-like texture tile seen in these grabs of primordial Keen. Nice to find clues as to the development of that Keen1 look and feel that comes so naturally to us now. Almost like paleontology.

Thanks Zilem :) Interesting point regarding the tile by tile movement. I wonder how the in-level physics was at that time.

Romero has been on a spree of posing alphas and beta pictures lately, just like he did with DOOM/2.
Me and omer made a rainbow dash HUD for doom, for our mistake most of the doomers are anti-bronies. Image

Romero's posting a lot of cool stuff, including a mystery bobby prince CD and an arch vile cutout.

I become hyper when I see these. I'm not sure they'd be legally able to release this in any way, which is a real pity, but it's still cool that we're getting all these screenshots!
