Audio cassette

Post by szemi »

Is there any country, where cassettes still exist?

In my country unfortunately you cannot find any (maybe blank cassette, but that's not sure either).
Yeah, piece of cake!

I'm pretty sure you can still find cassettes in the US, they're just not the standard medium anymore.

Have you tried eBay, to find what you're looking for?

I've got dozens and dozens of old cassette tapes, 2 brand new unopened tapes, and a few cassette players. Unfortunately I don't have a real mellotron. :p
On a related note, storage has become an issue now. I will have to get rid of all our old VCRs. :(

On a semi-related note (since this topic has basically become the "cassette appreciation thread"), about a year ago a news story came out about Sony making digital cassette tapes.

What do you guys think? Will cassette tapes become a new standard in the form of these new ones?

A couple years ago I bought an album on cassette, Laibach's "Kapital", for no reason other than that the cassette version is different (and, it turns out, better) than the digital version. It's a weird case and I haven't bought cassettes before or since, though there still seem to be a handful on sale. I can't say whether they're still being actually made, though.

A few Melbourne hipster bands release on audio casette. It's different, but not very popular at all.

Awww no mix tape jokes? hah. I remember recording favorite songs off the radio when I was a kid. Mostly comedy stuff though. In the USA you might find that stuff at garage sales or pawn shops if you're lucky.

I found a bunch of my old cassettes in a drawer (empty and self-recordings). You want them, szemi? I think I tried to make a Hexen mix tape on one.

I've still got some lying around, what was saddening was I found some of my Dad's 8-tracks and a player that were no longer working. (pretty sure it was the tapes, the player seemed to work fine)

Not sure about the rest of NZ but Auckland sure has them. What about down there, Levellass?

I'd be interested to know where exactly in Auckland you've seen them. I sure haven't seen anything other than CDs (or digital downloads) for a very long time, apart from the occasional case of vinyl in specialist stores.
