Doom, Doom 2 - aka editing the texts in the EXE files

Post by szemi »

I wanna ask whether how I can edit texts in DOOM.EXE and DOOM2.EXE. Because there are no patcher tools for DOOM and DOOM2 (like for Keen1-6).

Just wondering.

NOTE: No copyright infringement, just asking!
Yeah, piece of cake!

Umm, are you kidding?

This is Doom.

You know, the engine we were all modding before we found the keen modding board and discovered we could mod Keen, too.

Please tell me this is a joke.

Just go to Zdoom.org, download ZDoom (or better yet search for an available devbuild from DRDTeam, they're more up to date, and yes that is VERY improtant,) use the ZDoomwiki to learn the ins and outs of scripting and modding, download SLADE3 (download the w2k version if you're having issues with that) and go to town.

Use GZDoom for enhanced visual beauty. (I do. I always do.)

There's no need for editing texts in the EXE file. That is far outdated. You can do everything (or about everything but so far the community has been crushing limitations) with Zdoom and GZDoom.

Oh, get Doombuilder 2 if you want to start mapping (or the recent GZDoombuilder. that one works MUCH better for me.)

The DooM community long ago abandoned patching. They are an advanced race whose technology we can hardly even fathom. To them our greatest Lemm is nothing but a toddler playing in a sandbox (game).
What you really need, not what you think you ought to want.

In case you still want to limit yourself to mods compatible with Vanilla Doom, you ma limit yourself to what's possible with DeHackEd: http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/DeHackEd http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/utils/ ... /dhe31.zip

Note that in case you want to use any of the original EXEs, it should be edited, rather than being patched in memory as done with CKPATCH. However, some source ports include the ability to dynamically load DeHackEd patches on the fly. The one closest to Vanilla Doom in terms of behaviors and compatibility may be Chocolate Doom: http://www.chocolate-doom.org/
