How old are you?

Post by keenmaster486 »

Cue evil laughter:

MWA HA HA HA HAA!

Actually, no, I'm not going to make you reply to this. Only if you want to :P

I'm 18, which, I think, is rather young for a Keener. But hey, we'll need new blood eventually, right?

Crazy to think that I was born 8 years after Keen came out, and yet it's still my favorite video game of all time.

Anyone brave enough to post their age for the record books?

I think we could all have predicted these results.

Well, I'm in my 10s, from the day the ROM trilogy was released, and the day I posted this.

Not in the regular sense, my job does grant a day off on the day annually but it's not an official public holiday.

There used to be a load of teens on these boards. I joined when I was 17 (2010) and there were others younger than me. I'm surprised the forum's youth reach is still this strong.

So the majority are 21-30? If you're 21 you were born about five years after Keen. And if you're 30 you were just four when Keen came out. Which means that what predicts membership of the Keen community is clearly not growing up with Keen as a contemporary game. Rather, I would imagine, it is a combination of exposure to legacy equipment and gaming, and even more importantly, growing up with the internet. Perhaps those kids who actually bought Keen in 1990 (say, twelve year olds) were all too old to have endless spare time during the Internet era, so they never googled Keen and got hooked on the Community/fan activities e.g. fan games, levels and mods.

I'm 24. My parents found Keen as the "bonus game" on a shareware Battleship floppy at a local $2 shop. I remember watching my dad play when I was probably three years old. While we did have the internet relatively early, we never downloaded games because dialup was ridiculously expensive and our connection was particularly slow.

I suspect some younger people here might have found the game through older siblings or cool parents ;)

Edit: minor rewrite of a sentence.

Well, my dad was the one who introduced me to Keen through a shareware disk which came with his joystick :)

Although once in a while I try to get him to play Keen again and he says "When you get old, you don't play video games any more" in his best "serious" voice. He's still really cool though :celtic
