Foray in the Forest
Re: Foray in the Forest
Just a reminder that you can collect a great deal of lives from one of the first levels of the game (the Deciduous Forest), and then if you make sure you die before completing the level, you can collect as many extra lives as you wish. There's really no excuse for running out of lives in this game.

Changes:
We did our best to make the game inform you about the most important updates. If you want to know what awaits you without having to download the game first, read on!
Difficulty Levels:
If you haven't played Foray in the Forest before, I would recommend that you play the game on "Easy" difficulty for your first playthrough. It allows you to save as much as you want, which makes it easier to learn how the new mechanics, hazards and creatures work without wasting lives.
There is no penalty for playing on "Easy" difficulty. You can unlock all endings on any difficulty level. The only thing that may change is that the janitor won't encourage you to play the game on a higher difficulty during the end text when you win the game on the highest difficulty, because there is no higher difficulty level.
Don't worry too much about "missing" content by playing on "Easy". Some levels come in slightly different versions, depending on which difficulty you have selected. That makes it impossible to see all versions of each level in a single playthrough. This game was meant to be played several times and some aspects were designed specifically to let you see new things during your second or third playthrough.
If you're playing on "Normal" or "Hard", the free retries per checkpoint allow you to see what's about to come without risking to lose a life right away. When you run out of free retries, you should probably pay one life to save your game because the next death is going to cost you a life anyway. So unless you're confident that you can get to the next checkpoint without dying, paying a life to save the game will be the best decision, because it allows you to load that saved game as many times as you like without losing additional lives.
It might help to use two save slots, one for games saved on the world map and the other for mid-level saves. If you waste too many lives, either by dying or by saving the game too many times, you still have the option to go back to your world map save and restart the level if you think you can do better during the next attempt. You don't really need to do this, of course, since getting a Game Over and continuing to play afterwards also allows you to restart the level. But if you don't want to have your score reset to 0, you should use the two save slots approach.
The new "Expert" difficulty is basically the same as "Hard", except that you can only save the game on the world map (and in the BWB level) and you don't get a free retry for each checkpoint. There will be no special ending for finishing the game on this difficulty level! If playing the game like this is not fun for you, simply don't use it.
The Secret Contest:
As far as I'm concerned, the contest is over. You can still trigger the secret in the new version, but I am not going to send out any physical copies of the game.
Those who did receive a physical copy of the game can contact me and I will prepare a custom version of the new installer that has your name on it and plays your favorite tune in the background (assuming it will still fit onto the disk). This offer is valid for everyone who owns a physical copy, not just for the winners of the contest.
Development History:
Nisaba and I have been working together on this update until early July 2024. The last message I got mentioned a series of hardware failures. I have not received any new messages since then. I have no idea what happened, but I hope that Nisaba is doing alright and is just taking a well-deserved break from everything Keen-related.
The new help texts and pretty much all of the new images in this update were created or at least added to the game by Nisaba. I tried to preserve what Nisaba had come up with and modify as little as possible.
I had to make some modifications to some of the levels for this update. The most painful one was that I had to remove a shortcut that Nisaba had added in Manara Samarra. The new version was supposed to allow Keen to exit the cave with the toy through the back wall while standing on the floating log, which would have caused him to fall down the waterfall on the outside. It was a cool addition, but it could be unreliable because of the animated tiles in the background and the log sinking into the water. Keen was teleported into a wall in one of my test runs, making the level unwinnable, so I had to remove that shortcut.
One of the last things we discussed was whether adding even more alternative map designs would have been possible without making the game too large to fit onto a single floppy. So chances are that Nisaba wanted to fine-tune a few more levels for certain difficulties. Maybe we'll get to see them one day, but not in this update.
The Manual:
Some of the information given in the printed manual (MANUAL.PDF) didn't really apply to version 2.0 anymore. I don't have the source files for that manual, so I can't just edit it and update the information in that document. I ended up doing a few hasty edits by using text box overlays on top of the scanned-in pages.
That's actually pretty close to an idea that was mentioned in Nisaba's last message, which was having stickers printed to update the already printed manual booklets with the new information. I don't know what those stickers would have looked like, but I guess they would have fit much better than what I did here.
One thing I didn't update in the manual was the quiz about the game in numbers. Updating it with the correct numbers for the 2.0 release via text box overlays would have made it too easy to spot the correct answers.
I would like to do a proper revision of the manual at some point. I think I can recreate most of the pixel art images used in the manual, but I don't think I can do that for the title image, the comic panels or the cut-out badges. If anybody still has some of the source files for those, please let me know.
Savegame Compatibility:
Savegames from the initial 1.0 release are incompatible with the version 2.0 game executables. Even if you copy your old saved games into the same directory as the 2.0 game files, the old savegames will still just show up as empty slots.
The new 2.0 savegames from the Xky Keen version and the Classic Keen version are also incompatible with each other. They don't have to be, but I decided to make them incompatible because the hitboxes of the Xky Keen sprites differ slightly from those used by the Classic Keen sprites. Loading a saved game in the wrong version of the game might have caused Keen to get moved into a wall or something like that and I wanted to avoid those problems right from the start.
If you don't feel like starting all over, you can use the Savegame Converter.
This tool allows you to convert v1.0 savegames into v2.0 savegames and it also allows you to convert your saves back and forth between the Xky-Keen and the Classic-Keen versions. Just copy it into your FITF directory and run it (in DOSBox). The user interface should be self-explanatory.
The only caveat: Converting your saved games means you will have to restart the current level. Therefore it's best to use the converter on games that were saved on the world map (level 0).
Installer vs. DOSBox:
When you run the floppy disk installer in DOSBox, you will get a message that tells you to download the regular zip file instead. That's because the MAPTEMP.CKS file that comes with this version was modified a bit to allow better compression ratios. It's still a perfectly valid level file. The game has absolutely no problems reading the level data from it. But some level editors might have problems with it and corrupt the file when you try to edit the levels, which is why the installer should only be used to install and play the game on a real DOS system, not to mod it on a modern system.
Another problem with using the floppy disk installer in DOSBox is that it doesn't preserve the time stamps of the files when using the latest "official" DOSBox 0.74-3 builds for Windows. That is a bug in the main DOSBox branch. The bug is fixed in other branches like DOSBox Staging.

Changes:
We did our best to make the game inform you about the most important updates. If you want to know what awaits you without having to download the game first, read on!
- You can finally play the game using Nisaba's version of the classic Keen 4-6 sprites if you want.
- A launcher program allows you to select which character you want to play as.
- Checkpoints now allow the player to retry a few times without losing a life. The number of free retries per checkpoint depends on the selected difficulty and ranges from 3 (easy) to 0 (expert).
- An overlay icon on the checkpoint mushroom tells you how many free retries you have left for this checkpoint.
- The option to QuickLoad your last save has been added to the "You didn't make it past ..." window.
- The game keeps track of your progress since the last save and adds QuickLoad at a different position in that menu to sort the options from least amount of lost progress to biggest amount of lost progress. You can usually just select the first option in the list and continue playing.
- The detector window now includes direction indicators for all types of items.
- Using the detector on the world map now shows you a mini-map of the area with all the important landmarks highlighted.
- Levels were modified and signs and checkpoints were added to guide the player and reduce the overall difficulty a bit.
- A fourth "Expert" difficulty level was added for those who seek more than a self-imposed challenge.
- The game no longer allows you to keep cheated extra lives when loading a checkpoint that resets the game to a non-cheated state. (Sorry!
) - Various bugs were fixed.

What a nice sprprise for a Keen day!
Re: Foray in the Forest
Downloads have been updated on KeenWiki! I only played through the first level and then previewed the others via the warp cheat, but from what I can tell, this update looks pretty solid. I'm pretty glad to see the mushroom level touched up, especially in that one area near the beginning where you could get stuck. I don't understand the point of showing the radar when you start a level, even if you can turn it off. The minimap on the worldmap is pretty cool. Also, I found an interesting sign...a Sign of the Vool, it seems...

I will have to download the new version.
Is the "Easy" difficulty easier now? Because sorry, but for me, in the first version, even the easiest difficulty level was way too hard...
I'm just too double-left-handed, but I enjoy Keen games because of... first of all my love for well-made pixel art.

Yes it is easier, here are several of the things K1n9_Duk3 did to decrease the difficulty:Nowhere Girl wrote: Sun Mar 16, 2025 10:39 I will have to download the new version.

I could be wrong since I haven't played the easy difficulty since I play tested it but it seems to me that there are a few enemies here and there that were taken out of a few levels to make them easier. I am sure Duk3 will correct me on this if I am. He also added a few more easter eggs to find. As for the secret / bonus levels, levels not accessible on the world map and levels not accessible with the warp cheat are still the same:K1n9_Duk3 wrote: Fri Mar 14, 2025 10:36 At long last, I proudly present: Foray in the Forest version 2.0.........

One more thing, and this applies to all who have already played the game, besides being able to talk to the Janitor more than once when you sleep next to one and when you have Nisasi your the head in Donut Dome you are supposed to be able to talk to the Janitor more than once in every level you see him. BUT STILL I haven't been able to figure out how to do it YET! It has been the one thing I still have yet to accomplish, other than completing the new expert level Duk3 added. Wish me luck!

Re: Foray in the Forest
I would like to have this custom installer but I have a question first. Does this have to go onto a disk, or can you send me a download file of the installer with my name and favorite FITF soundtrack tune? Neither my laptop or my Surface Pro has a hard or floppy disk drive so if this installer has to go onto a disk I cannot play it anyway so it would be useless to me. Granted I also cannot play my physical copy of FITD, but it is still a cool souvenir to have, even more so since I was the first one to win the physical copy.K1n9_Duk3 wrote: Fri Mar 14, 2025 10:36

Re: Foray in the Forest
Thank you for taking care of that once again.
The main reason to show the detector window at the start of each level was to let the most ignorant players who refuse to read the help texts know that this feature exists. That's why the current key to trigger the detector is shown at the top. And it's also there to hopefully make the players realize that there are a lot of extra lives to be gained in a certain level near the BWB landing zone and that they should search for those lives before leaving that level.Quillax wrote: Sat Mar 15, 2025 17:15 don't understand the point of showing the radar when you start a level, even if you can turn it off.
Just to be clear, those are all Nisaba's additions. I only edited a few minor things in the levels.Syllypryde wrote: Sun Mar 16, 2025 15:52 He also added a few more easter eggs to find. [...] Duke added an additional secret level that is hidden and unreachable
You can't talk to the janitor again after your first conversation. Think of a way to reset the janitor to his previous state without loading a saved game. (With the savegame converter, you can even do it with loading a game that was saved after you spoke with the janitor.)Syllypryde wrote: Sun Mar 16, 2025 15:52 you are supposed to be able to talk to the Janitor more than once in every level you see him
It's hard to give you hints when I haven't seen you play the game. I don't know which parts you have trouble with. Be sure to read the hints text in the launcher, there is a lot of valuable spoiler-free information in there.Nowhere Girl wrote: Sun Mar 16, 2025 10:39 I will have to download the new version.

Use god mode if you have to. You will miss out on two secret levels if you cheat, and you will get a special ending text, but you will still get to see most of the content. And maybe a second playthrough without cheats will be easier after that.
Like I said, I am not going to send out physical copies. The custom installer will be a pure digital download. Send me a pm and tell me which name and song you would like.Syllypryde wrote: Sun Mar 16, 2025 16:09 I would like to have this custom installer but I have a question first. Re: Foray in the Forest
Is the game's full soundtrack available as audio files? I recall that being advertised as part of the 2.0 update.
In any case, the new detector window is hella useful, and I kind of wish the original games had something like it, if for no other reason than for the fans and level designers alike to know which levels can't be 100-percented due to sloppy level design.
Just did a minimalist run, and as it turns out, it's possible to beat the game only picking up a single candy (near the end of The Magic Wonderland, by the top right switch), provided you only play the mandatory levels.

I don't recall that ever being advertised, but I have prepared a soundtrack package anyway.Lower IQ than 314 wrote: Mon Mar 17, 2025 19:45 Is the game's full soundtrack available as audio files? I recall that being advertised as part of the 2.0 update.
This package includes the soundtrack files in three versions: direct game rip (mix of IMF and KMF files), pure IMF files, and size-optimized KMF files. The optimized files might produce slightly different sounds due to the instrument optimizations, but I haven't noticed any differences here.
Well, that means it's possible to beat the game with 0 points. You don't need to flip that switch when you use the other exit. But if you play with the classic sprites, you will have to take a death in the next level and exit to the world map for a true 0 points playthrough.Lower IQ than 314 wrote: Mon Mar 17, 2025 19:45 t's possible to beat the game only picking up a single candy (near the end of The Magic Wonderland, by the top right switch),

Re: Foray in the Forest
Thank you muchly, K1n9. It occurs to me that this soundtrack release is probably the only way to relisten to the initial startup menu music after the first time you see said screen, since it never comes up again any other time you start up the game -- short of repeatedly extracting the game files from the compressed folder that it comes in, that is.
And yes, I was playing with classic sprites, so that explains why I wasn't able to get through that secret level without accidentally picking up points.

Re: Foray in the Forest
I just realized that one of my modifications has made it impossible to re-enter certain levels after they have been completed. This problem can be solved by modifying one single byte in the game executables. If you want, you can use the following patch script in combination with my patching utility to modify the game executables.
If you prefer re-compiling from the source code, you will need to modify the PatchWorldMap() function in CK_GAME.C and replace GAMELEVELS with MAP_ACMELABLEVEL at line 1492.
Or you can just download the updated executables if that's easier for you.
The patched executables are still 100% compatible with the original 2.0 executables, so you won't lose any progress by applying the hotfix. If you load a game that was saved on the world map, you will need to enter a level (like the BWB level, for example) and then return to the world map to make the other levels available again.
Code: Select all
%exefile fitf-x.exe 207178
%patch $F90A $18
%exefile fitf-c.exe 207178
%patch $F90A $18
%end
Or you can just download the updated executables if that's easier for you.
