NEW FEATURES
= = = = = = = = = = =
For this game, we have developed countless new features that we believe will increase the fun and replay value of the game. There are actually too many of them for us to discuss them all in detail here. Nevertheless, let's scratch the surface and take a brief look at the most important changes. For more in depth info you can either browse the HINT.COM file, visit the in-game HELP section or flick through the MANUAL.PDF.

-> Perfect Score: collecting points will unlock neat extras and bonus levels
-> Multiple Endings: your decisions during the game will have an impact
-> Quick-Save / Quick-Load: save and load your game with a simple keystroke
-> Saving Costs A Life: I know it sounds crazy, but it actually gives new meaning to collecting drops and extra lives
-> Limited Ammunition: don't worry, there's plenty to find
-> Special Status Window: with the help of this additional status window you can detect items nearby, like ammo for e.g.
-> 19 Playable Levels: well, technically speaking, there are 47 levels in total. Happy exploring!
-> Iterations Of The World: the layouts and structures of the levels have also been adapted for each difficulty level! Same goes for enemy behaviour
-> More Of Everything: 30+ songs, 30+ enemies, 30+ point items, tilesets 3x the size, and so much more to explore...

Before you start, please take a look at the story. You can access it by pressing F1. And don't forget to inspect the MANUAL.PDF

GAME DEVELOPMENT
= = = = = = = = = = = = = =
At long last, after eight years (fourteen if we count Mr. M initial announcement of the mod), I can finally make this post. :pogo Thank you all for your patience, contributions and warmhearted support. I hope you have as much fun playing the game as I had creating it.

This game is the product of years of hard work from many people. My intention for this mod has always been to bring together the best quality pieces from the community that have somehow fallen under the radar. It all started with a lost project by Mr. M, which I fell in love with. From there things evolved quite a bit. You will come across some more, some less familiar designs that will light up. There will certainly be one or two cross-references to discover. And of course previously unseen material will be celebrated as well. There are tons of things to explore!

I look forward to hearing your thoughts and feedback. In particular, let me know if you find anything in the level design that you think might benefit from. I'll take all suggestions into consideration. Please report bugs, problems, and other recommendations here. And of course I'm delighted to see recorded playthroughs, as they make my modding heart soar.

Just downloaded it! What a way to start off Christmas Day than by picking up a copy of one of the most anticipated mods of all time! Thank You Nisaba for the awesome Christmas present! I've only played 1 level of this and I'm already blown away by everything you've pulled off! Everything is excellent, and the efforts of you and everyone who assisted with making this clearly shows even in just the little taste I've experienced so far! I look forward to playing this while I'm on Christmas break!

Merry Christmas Nisaba! :christmas

So, huge congratulations on the release! <3
I'd just like to say it was an honor to work on this mod. I know this community has done lots of them already, but for me, it's the first time I got to be a part of the team that made a Keen game, which still feels... weird, in the best way possible :)

Anyway, I've deliberately tried to not spoil the game for myself with all the various demos and betas, so I guess it's finally time to switch from a game dev to a game fan and enjoy this game!

Thanks so much again to you and all the other contributors for putting this together! (you all have some inhuman persistence :))

OK, a small inaccuracy I've selfishly noticed, in the BwB jukebox, one (well two really) of the tracks is called "Icy F 10rppq"

That's... very much just a filename :]
- I've originally named it just "Hillville [Icy Hell Version]"
- The base for the FitF version was the final version I've released in my Keen 4 remix pack...
- ...on top of which this is the 10th version for FitF
- ...with reduced MIDI PPQ (pulses per quarter note) so that the IMF wouldn't blow past 64 kB

I mean you can keep it as is if you'd like, just wanted to clarify

How does this not have several pages of replies already????? Congrats on finally releasing this! Due to IRL stuff I won't be playing this right away, but I'm still stoked! Glad I was able to make some graphics for it! :)

Nisaba, you did a great job! Thank you for the kind words, but I'd say you deserve all the credit for putting it all together. Literally.

I wish I could just erase all FITF-related memories from my brain and experience it all again for the first time, like most of you Keeners out there have experienced it or are yet going to experience it. There are so many neat little details, so many new ideas. Features that (I hope) will make you think "WHAT? The engine can do THIS!?" :O

I hope you're all having tons of fun playing Foray in the Forest. I had fun playing it and I had fun writing code for it.

By the way, what are your best Nom Nom scores so far? Mine is still 39.
Keenest person of the year 2024. Hail to the Keen, baby!

Goodness me this is a mammoth release!! Well done!! There's just so much fun in this!! And somehow it really pulls in influences from all the original games and many mods, putting its own stamp on things whilst delivering surprise after surprise. I'm seeing things I never thought I'd see here! Amazing stuff really. Playing with the "Legberys" has seriously distracted me from the game! And the music is incredible. This is a soundtrack I would 100% buy on a vinyl if someone pressed it. Right now I must in particular praise the rework of "Tropical Ghost Oasis" which sounds like an Orbital rave cover from 1991 would have sounded.

I really wish I wasn't so rubbish at playing Commander Keen!

I think it is really cool that my 1,000th post is here on the new Foray in the Forest thread. I was one of the playtesters. Nisaba had told me that all of the other playtesters each had a specific job to do. My specific job was to unravel and unlock everything in the game. Besides looking for tile errors, misspelled words, busted levels, abnormal creature behaviors, and other busts, I was to complete the game on all skill levels, find all the secrets, find all the Easter eggs, unlock all 6+ endings, and of course give my opinion on what works and what doesn't. There was a lot of off the walls ideas I threw in her direction. With the exception of one thing, I was successful in my task. However she did tell me there would be a few new secrets I did not encounter in the pre-released game.

With all of that out of the way, due to me having a significant advantage and head start over many in the community here, I have already completed this on easy and normal, achieved the perfect score, unlocked all of the endings (except for one not available in the pre-released game?), and already begun my hard run. Nisaba did mention to me there might be a reward for getting a perfect game on hard and I am looking forward to see what that reward is.

I think many in the community will agree that this 14+ year wait was well worth the wait and I believe this game is going to rival Atroxian Realm, though it is still my favorite Keen game. As a previous poster had said, I am kind of amazed there aren't more posts on this topic. Maybe everyone is playing it right now and don't have time to post. You never know!

GOD BLESS YOU WITH 10 MILLION GOLD FOR THIS PROJECT! :christmas

Haha, just kidding. I'm hyper-super glad that this project eventually came to end and finally finished. Will definitely play as soon as I finished my own project. :)
Yeah, piece of cake!

Congratulations on getting this out the door! I still remember the original mod announcement by Mr. M, it's great to see how far the project has come since then.

It's the actual release thread. :O

tbh, with how long this was taking, I though this wouldn't get to a released state. I didn't try it yet, but it sounds like the most ambitious mod so far by quite a distance. Congratz on completing this. Well done.

My mind is totally blown. I'm only 1 level in and already I know I have something very special on my hands. Hell I already knew this the moment I entered the world map!

This doesn't even feel so much like a Keen Galaxy game anymore, this is next gen! If this had VGA graphics I'd have thought TUIT had come out and this was it. There are so many amazing new features and so much polish. The 70 FPS hack makes the entire game feel super smooth, there are new mechanics, new animations, so many creatures, I'm just... This is amazing. I'm going to savor this game and play through slowly and thoroughly.
