Big List of Mods of Apogee/Epic/other 90s dos shareware games besides FPS
Big List of Mods of Apogee/Epic/other 90s dos shareware games besides FPS
Welcome to my giant list of mods for early 90s Dos shareware games, most of which are by Apogee, Epic and ID Software. This list intentionally excludes the thousands of mods that exist for 90s fps games such as Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Heretic, Hexen, Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, etc. which are far too numerous to put in this list and much better documented elsewhere such as these websites: https://www.moddb.com http://doomarchive.com/ http://doomwadstation.net/ https://www.doomworld.com/10years/bestwads/ https://doomwiki.org/wiki/List_of_notable_WADs
The list also excludes modern remakes of dos games and user created content for those remakes. So for example, I'm excluding the modern windows remakes of Crystal Caves and Secret Agent and their user created levels, as well as the fan remake of Xargon in the Unity Engine available on Steam that has a lot of new user created content. This list is focused on mods of the original dos versions of the games, and is intended to be stuff that could be played in a dos emulator or on a dos pc.
I have not downloaded and tested or archived all of this content myself. Some of the download links are 10+ years old, or go to websites that were last updated in 2002, and sadly I noticed a couple download links that are already dead... so if anyone else would like to start archiving this stuff sooner rather than later, that could be a good idea for preserving it.
If you know of additional mods/level packs/custom content for these or similar games, please let me know in this thread and I'll periodically update this list.
So without further ado - on to the mods.

Re: Mods of Apogee/epic/other 90s dos shareware games besides Keen series
Thanks! I'm trawling the forums and some other places right now and have a 4 page list with links in progress. Will upload it here soon.
EDIT: List now uploaded in first post. Anyone, please feel free to tell me what I'm missing. I thought I'd seen more Hocus Pocus / Crystal Caves / Secret Agent stuff before, but couldn't find it when making the list today. I've also seen some indication that custom Skyroads levels exist as there are at least two level editors available, but didn't see any download links when looking today.

Hmm, that looks like a potentially useful resource of information. Since I've just been reminded of it, there's Supaplex, including custom levels made for it as currently available from Elmer Productions' website.
That one wasn't mine, I simply linked to the archive and a demonstration video. The video might not be there anymore, but try using the Wayback Machine for the ZIP file - I correctly recalled posting about it, albeit it was in a Duke4.net thread about Bio Menace (I posted the modified URL in 2022).dark wrote: ↑Sat Sep 07, 2024 17:142012 Biomenace test level mods by NY00123 (download link broken, download unavailable elsewhere?)

That's a good suggestion. Jazz Jackrabbit 2 has significantly more user-made contents (especially with its multiplayer support), so listing JJ1 only makes sense. People may also download files for JJ1 from the Jazz2Online website, albeit the great majority of contents are still for JJ2.

I added some stuff I saw here related to Supaplex, I didn't actually see level packs on Elmer productions website but linked to it anyway figuring there might be some custom levels included with the various level editors they host.NY00123 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 07, 2024 20:59 Hmm, that looks like a potentially useful resource of information. I changed the info for the Biomenace test levels. I didn't see a backup of the download available on archive.org, if you think there might be a link to it elsewhere feel free to post and I'll add it.
I figured I'd leave jazz 2 out for now since it's a Windows game and is from a different era in gaming than most of the rest of the titles on the list. I'm not that familiar with the jazz2online site, is there a way to sort the download section for content for jazz 1 only? Probably some additional stuff there that can be added to the list.
Re: Big List of Mods of Apogee/Epic/other 90s dos shareware games besides FPS and Keen series
Look for a "New levels" URL on the top of the main Supaplex page.
Unaware of any at the moment. For reference, this Wayback Machine URL seems to work for now: https://web.archive.org/web/20141013111 ... ce_mod.zipI changed the info for the Biomenace test levels. You may currently select "JJ1 Level" under "View". But JJ1-compatible contents might also fall under other categories, like "Music".I figured I'd leave jazz 2 out for now since it's a Windows game and is from a different era in gaming than most of the rest of the titles on the list. Re: Big List of Mods of Apogee/Epic/other 90s dos shareware games besides FPS
Lots of updates to the list since earlier today. Also nominally added Keen mods to the list by pointing to the release forum here and the Keen wiki to cover things at a high level. Could be good to have in here in case I share the list in places that are not PCKF and people don't already know about Keen mods.
Please share anything else that comes to mind that might fit on the list. Is it really the case that there is only one Monster Bash mod, one custom level for Hocus Pocus, and only one Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure mod that has new levels? Or that Roobar's Duke 2 levels are the only Duke 2 levels that have seen a public release? Or that there has only been one proof of concept user created level for the dos version of Secret Agent?

Re: Big List of Mods of Apogee/Epic/other 90s dos shareware games besides FPS
No, there's my custom level and Shikadi's custom pack. Both are on my site.
All the rest of those 34 files are editing tools, edits of the official levels (most of which are now included with the game on GOG), or earlier versions. The ones on my site should be a full list of custom levels. (Also it's not clearly labeled on the site, but the free Xmas versions are modded to all play together as a single episode and show fewer loading screens.)dark wrote: ↑Sat Sep 07, 2024 17:14 18 Jazz Jackrabbit mods, including the Epic Megagames free Xmas versions of Jazz, as well as many custom levels by fans

34 jazz jackrabbit 1 mods/level packs, some overlap with the previous link (change view to "JJ1" and run a search of the archive to list Jazz 1 levels, the archive in this link also contains hundreds of custom levels and other content for jazz jackrabbit 2)

Another DOS game: looks like Museum of ZZT has around 4000 ZZT mods.

Nice list! Here's a list with a few more Duke 2 mods: https://github.com/lethal-guitar/RigelE ... st-of-mods
Re: Big List of Mods of Apogee/Epic/other 90s dos shareware games besides FPS
Thanks, do you know if they all need rigel engine to work, or if they would work in dos with the original or a patched exe?Roobar wrote: ↑Sun Sep 08, 2024 10:05 Nice list! Here's a list with a few more Duke 2 mods: https://github.com/lethal-guitar/RigelE ... st-of-mods

For Supaplex, there's an in-browser version available (https://www.supaplex.online/) with hunderds of levelpacks and thousands of levels, there's also an in browser level editor (https://sple.me/)
nothing usefull here
Re: Big List of Mods of Apogee/Epic/other 90s dos shareware games besides FPS
Good to know. I might supplement this list later to include things like complete remakes of games that share no code or files with the dos versions, remade engines like commander genius and that moddable remake of lemmings and links to significant modding tools and prototypes of the original games.
My goal for now is trying to focus on stuff that is a mod of the original dos game, and which can therefore probably run on old dos machines (which I like to do a lot), but I did make an exception for rigel engine as it seemed too harsh to completely remove the Duke nukem 2 category when it's such a popular and notable title, and I'd added stuff for it before I knew it needed rigel

Re: Big List of Mods of Apogee/Epic/other 90s dos shareware games besides FPS
Great list, dark! It's really cool to see what other 90s DOS games got mods and how many. I remember playing some Duke Nukem I levelpacks long ago, and trying out the level editor. I always find it interesting that the Apogee games don't get as many mods as Keen, Wolfenstein, and Doom do.
To add to the ZZT section, there's a website that has a ZZT section, with a page for the webmaster's ZZT mods, at least one of which (Santa's Advocate, I believe) isn't available in Museum of ZZT last time I checked:

Re: Big List of Mods of Apogee/Epic/other 90s dos shareware games besides FPS
Great updates to the list, and it’s awesome to see so many mods getting recognition. For your last point about the "Santa's Advocate" mod for ZZT, thanks for sharing the link! It’s a cool addition to the ZZT collection, and the Koshka.love site looks like a nice resource for ZZT enthusiasts.
I also agree that it’s interesting how the Apogee games didn’t quite hit the same modding level as titles like Doom or Keen, especially considering how beloved they are. It’s cool to see folks digging into lesser-known gems like *Bio Menace* or *Hocus Pocus*. Hopefully, the list continues to grow and attract more mods for these underrated classics.
