Keen 9.5: The Eight Accumulators

Post by Bubbatom »

It's finally finished! After many hours of work and many problems. Keen 9.5 is complete. :birthday

Get it here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/53144544/Keen%209.5.zip

This is the first mod/levelpack that I have finished and I am quite proud of it. Although it is only a levelpack I have done quite a bit of tile and graphics editing.

Many thanks to everyone with ideas on the forum and special thanks to Mink, Ceilick and Gridlock.

Hope you enjoy my levelpack! :dopefish

This is awesome :drool I'm about halfway through on hard mode and everything I've seen so far is fantastic. Only quibble so far is with a few minor graphical bugs and tile properties, but nothing thus far that really detracts from the game.

Really enjoying the level design and the story; your characterization of Keen as aloof is hilarious.

Will post more detailed thoughts when I complete it, but from what i've seen so far, great job dude!

Edit: Gameplay bug: in the Pyramid of Heat there's a switch which doesn't activate the goplat. The switch is in the right of the room and an arachnut and treasure eater in the room.

Got stuck on the Pyramid of Heat, but then found a bug where I could grab a ledge on the top right corner of the map and fake-exit.
I stopped playing there because I wasn't sure if there was a council member in there or not, and I didn't want to continue the game if I missed one. (I wouldn't be able to win)

So far it's pretty neat. I love Keen 4 level packs, and this one has just enough extra artwork and flavor to keep it interesting. My favorite level thus far is probably the Pyramid of Light.

Good job.

Gave it a brief look-see. I'll go into it a lot more once exam week is over. What little I saw is great though. :)

Game crashes in the BwB level when viewing the pulldown scorebox.

US_CPrintLine:() - String exceeds width.

Looks like it's the only level where it happens, so far..

Otherwise this looks great, man!

Thanks for the feedback guys.

The link has been updated to fix both the BWB problem and the several tile errors that Pyramid of Heat had in the pyramid blocks.
PS: I've also added a patch that stops the level warp cheat (I've done this because the level numbers and order they come in the game are all messed up).

Alright, I'm not sure if it's because I loaded an old save file (I really did NOT feel like playing through all those levels AGAIN, so I loaded from the temple of heat and killed myself and re-entered), but the switch bug was not fixed after I updated the game files, therefor, I wound up using my first cheat in the game, no clipping, to go down to the council member. I am now continuing the game cheat free and will post back here after I've completed it. :)

EDIT: Found another bug. It's a small one, but definitely f*cks up the game play. On the Pyramid of Pain, (which lives up to its name, by the way) I kept dying for seemingly no reason and kept having to reload my saved game. Now this is common on this level, but there was something odd about this. So I moved off to the side, and noticed a dart was appearing out of nowhere and flickering in just one tile space. I managed to capture a snapshot of it so you can see the exact location. Now keep in mind, this dart that I circled is not coming from the ceiling. It appears that the dart shooter was placed right on the floor there by accident, and it makes this area a lot harder than it should be.

EDIT 2: Just beat the game, and I must say, it was well worth it.
The secret levels were great, the levels were really clever and the ending was just plain hilarious.

I laughed, I cussed, and best part of all, I didn't regret playing it at all.
It really brought me back to the first time I played Keen 4. 'Twas an awesome Keening experience. Thanks for the ride, Bubbatom!
I hope you get the kinks worked out real soon!

So far it's very cool. Very much like the levels design and the world map. But I won't update to the newer version because after I finished it, I would like to visit some levels using the warp etc. You should have disabled the cheats in the first version, not vise-verse.

Playing it now, this is awesome. I always seem to miss it when something important happens.
Combine Garg and Apples in a bowl, simmer over medium heat for several years. Season with a pinch of regret.

I have now fixed the switch bug and also all the bugs that let you climb through the Pyramid blocks in Pyramid of Heat. That flickering dart in Pyramid of Pain is also gone.

I'm really glad you enjoyed it!

I hoped it would take some people back to their first time playing Keen 4.

This looks absolutely amazing so far! One minor quibble...the finishing text on the pyramid of light has the apostrophe in the wrong place on didn't. It says "did'nt".
I'd like to get a Futurama mod going. Here's what I've got so far:

Hey there,

Great job! It's nice to try out another level pack.

***WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS ARE COMING!***

The Eight Accumulators has had enough "tiny" things that set it apart from the original in various ways, such as:
- Some new ways of mixing different kinds of tiles.
- A few newly added background (and foreground) tiles.
- *SPOILER WARNING SPOILER WARNING* Oh yes, I like how you can see "that" bridge from the back...
- Initially, I've thought there's just a single secret level, with the nearby one being an ordinary level. Well, I've learnt that's not the case at all...
- *SPOILER WARNING?* Well, the fact that once you begin to swim on the world map, there isn't a lot to see surrounded by water...unless you count the secret levels as well, maybe.
- *SPOILER WARNING?* Finally, if anybody has wondered about the "inaccessible" level not far from the BwB Megarocket - No it's not a bug :)
- Oh and, of course, one can find more of these.

As for any major problem? Well, it's more of an original Keen 4 thing: One knows that the original game hasn't got a lot of (music) tracks. That may explain why, at least in the beginning, I've had some feeling of repetitiveness when it comes to the tracks. It clearly occurs in Keen 4, though, and we've got used to it. Might even be more noticeable in Keen 4, in fact.

And now, to become a little more nitpicky ;-)
Some reported bugs, mostly with pics:

- Story bug (missing space before quotation mark):
"Actually, If you don't mind I'll stay back here... I have some cleaning up to attend to" the Janitor mumbles lazily."I'm too old for this adventure stuff... Back in my day we would all..."

- In Dusty Fort: It has occurred to me twice, that you touch the top of the screen (sky) and then die. Maybe a skypest is the cause? (Haven't seen one flying after dying in game, though.)

- OK now screenshot stuff...

Level 2 (Pyramid of Time):
http://www.picamatic.com/show/2011/12/1 ... gthumb.png
http://www.picamatic.com/show/2011/12/1 ... gthumb.png
- Notice that you can jump straight into it, not just from the left as possible in the original Keen 4 as well.
http://www.picamatic.com/show/2011/12/1 ... gthumb.png
- Yep, a glitch always occurring in the original Keen 4. Maybe can stay untouched then.
http://www.picamatic.com/show/2011/12/1 ... gthumb.png

Level 3 (The Oracle):
http://www.picamatic.com/show/2011/12/1 ... gthumb.png
- A bit of a glitchy sloped tile is over there.

Level 4 (The Perspicuus City):
http://www.picamatic.com/show/2011/12/1 ... gthumb.png

Level 8 (Defluo):
Unsure regarding the corners, but mentioning just in case these aren't "usual"...
http://www.picamatic.com/show/2011/12/1 ... gthumb.png
http://www.picamatic.com/show/2011/12/1 ... gthumb.png
http://www.picamatic.com/show/2011/12/1 ... gthumb.png
http://www.picamatic.com/show/2011/12/1 ... gthumb.png
http://www.picamatic.com/show/2011/12/1 ... gthumb.png
http://www.picamatic.com/show/2011/12/1 ... gthumb.png
- Here, "randomly", the level gets completed. It probably depends on the very specific location of Keen upon entering the door. As long as there's a block, though, the door seems to function as expected.

Level 9 (Pyramid of Heat):
http://www.picamatic.com/show/2011/12/1 ... gthumb.png
- While improved, it's still possible to climb. I have some guess the tileset may have to be edited in order to fix this.
http://www.picamatic.com/show/2011/12/1 ... gthumb.png
- Again a usual Keen 4 thing: You can get straight into the bottom of that "ceiling". I'm unsure, but maybe there's an alternate corner tile which may fix that, at least for here.

Level 10 (Lichen Caves):
http://www.picamatic.com/show/2011/12/1 ... gthumb.png

Level 15 (Pyramid of Pain):
http://www.picamatic.com/show/2011/12/1 ... gthumb.png
http://www.picamatic.com/show/2011/12/1 ... gthumb.png

Level 16 (The Crack):
http://www.picamatic.com/show/2011/12/1 ... gthumb.png
- The mushroom thing is a bit tricky to get and might, in fact, just be ignored. In order to attempt and reproduce it, save a game and then reload it. The Mad Mushroom's speed may vary as a result (an original Keen 4 glitch), possibly being the cause of this (if not another reason).

Level 17 (Well of Wonders):
http://www.picamatic.com/show/2011/12/1 ... gthumb.png
http://www.picamatic.com/show/2011/12/1 ... gthumb.png
http://www.picamatic.com/show/2011/12/1 ... gthumb.png
- I wonder if some of these were intended to be made like that. (for hiding?)

Alright, that's it for now...

Again, thanks a lot for the level pack!
