I just found out about this game: Alien Rampage.
It is looking very similar to Duke Nukem 2 in terms of gameplay and graphics. Too bad it lacks music and the sounds are lame.
When I dig more, I found something I didn't know. This was originally going to be Duke Nukem Forever! However, they abandon this and the source code was sold to these guys who made that game.
It's a bit dark, but it's worth checking that out and it really feels like Duke Nukem 2. Although there are some obvious improvements, Duke 2 is still better though.
Alien Rampage - very similar to Duke Nukem 2!
I don't like this game much either. Yes, I hate to shoot 1248023543298074 times a regular alien. I can't configure the controls as I like and the graphics are too dark, like ... . The main protagonist is also terrible. I'm playing it for the sake of Duke Nukem 2 nostalgia, hoping it will get better as the progress goes.
Re: Alien Rampage - very similar to Duke Nukem 2!
Now that we've access to the Duke Nukem Forever side scroller we can debunk this myth. Alien Rampage was released in September 1996, while they were still working on this Duke Nukem game in November 1996.

But is it really a myth? Can this be confirmed? They may have sold the engine like a year before, while not being too productive with their own Duke 4 game before deciding to cancel it.

This is the credits screen of Alien Rampage. It includes a Special Thanks To section. But there's no special thanks to Darrin Hurd even though he supposedly wrote the engine.
