Keen Dreams Manual (Gamer's Edge)

Post by troublesomekeen »

Hey there!
Done found myself some Softdisk Publishing. I tried to make scans of it, but the glossy paper is hard on the printer's eyes. Not sure how Dropbox handles PDFs, but see if it'll open:

Nothing much. Just a carrot speeding along. Wish it had pictures of all the creatures like the Keen6 manual. Anyways, thought I might share with you. :helmet

And here's me just finishing watching Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2.

Whatever happened to high quality Jpeg files? Why is everyone PDF these days?

I'm confused now. Does or doesn't Keen Dreams have music? My copy doesn't anyway.

Wow! I'm surprised Keen Dreams had a manual at all :).

@bloogbae probably they decided to cut the music after they printed this manual.

Cutting the music as well as the two other types of sound effects and Tandy option all occurred to save space.

Oddly the Dave series re-enables the different kinds of sound effects, but not the music.

Fantastic! I hope you didn't pay the outrageous price it was available for on ebay.

Turns out that one of my older brothers (some 30+ yrs along) has quite a treasure trove of manuals, floppies, game boxes, and a few maps. Back in them olden days, he would collect any freeware/shareware he could get his grimy hands on. He thought Keen Dreams was shareware, since he doesn't remember paying for it.

I was hoping the manual would shed some light on the mysterious Magic Eyeball but no such luck. In the Control section, there's a command called "Dive" which is done by pressing Down and Left (or Right) and Ctrl (Jump). Dive? I didn't know PJ Keen could Dive.

It's got to be a removed feature like the music. I can't make heads or tails out of it. Down+Left+Jump? That's crazy. When you press Ctrl, you're going to Jump. Is this an air move? I don't get it. I tried testing it in version 1.93, but all I ended up doing was this:

There are certainly no "diving" sprites from what I've seen. Dive? What would a dive be like in a game like this? Puzzling!

Been poking about and from what I've found Keen was originally able to 'float' on some (let's say water) surfaces and move beneath them, this is related to the 'top of exit sign' tile property. But sadly this feature was abandoned. It may be why there's a secret area 'under water' in one level.

They aren't Boobus' eyes, are they? Or just dream versions of potato eyes in general?

Was on the Keencyclopedia and was reminded of the eyes in that painting of Boobus that follow you around the room: http://dosclassics.com/keencyclopedia/d ... 0,a,name,0 Variation on a theme?

Can someone show me the Keen Dreams Gamer's Edge manual? The link isn't working/loading any more.

I would greatly appreciate the help.

I pulled the thing using the Wayback Machine. Here's a linky:

The Wayback Machine actually works surprisingly well for old, seemingly lost Keen material. Recommend trying that to anyone browsing old threads.
