Keen Story - the interactive Commander Keen Fan-fiction site
Keen Story - the interactive Commander Keen Fan-fiction site
Hi everyone! This is the first time I've released anything serious on the PCKF so I'm a little nervous and thus this topic might not read very well . Anyway. Some of you may have come across The Adventures of Brian the Mailman - the site no longer exists but it was basically an interactive fiction that anyone could add to (dead links brought up a thing for adding new chapters). The software behind it was an old opensource piece of CGI-BIN/Perl coding that was freely available for download. Some years back I obtained a copy and tried to get it to work, however, not being a Perl programmer I couldn't get it to work in any way and I gave up. However, a few days ago I needed a new project and I decided to try to clone the thing in PHP. I have managed to do just that and I present the result to you.
Behold: Keen Story.
It currently only has 2 chapters but the point is that everyone who takes part can add more! I fully expect the story to get quite silly knowing this place but I'm fine with that as long as it remains a story.
Have Fun!

Yes, this is an interesting take on the 'choose your own destiny story'. Back in the day they were in little paperbacks, so you often got sent back to previous chapters. As it stands, we will have to make an awful lot of chapters. For instance, to allow just a six-chapter narrative will require us to write 1365 chapters if all four options are to be available at all times!!
But let this not deter us!!!

Thank you for all the kind words and the chapters - I really didn't expect it to take off this quickly! Incidentally, I don't know how many chapters the webhost will allow us as the maximum size of the database isn't specified, but the theoretical limit of the database is over 2000000000 records/chapters!
BTW, if one of the PCKF's talented pixel-artists would like to make a Keen-style title-screen image that I can stick on the home page, that would be fantastic and will improve the look of the site no end!
Paramultart: The software shouldn't let you add blank answers - I don't know how you've managed that...
Edit: I checked the logs - 24 chapters so far!

You just leave fields blank and hit submit.
It's a good thing, too, because how else are you going to make endings?
Here's the start of my madness:

"Father Mabeuf was surveying his plants"
I found (and fixed) the bug. The story (stories?) aren't really supposed to have endings, but if people generally think this is a bad idea I'll comment out the check...Paramultart wrote:You just leave fields blank and hit submit.

I'm overwhelmed by the positive response to the site. Thank you all for being so awesome!
