Hello from 1994! (still waiting for TUIT... fingers crossed!)

Post by keenmaster486 »

It's 1994 and I've just got myself a brand new IBM Thinkpad 755C!

It has an incredibly fast Intel 486DX4 CPU running at 75 MHz. I'm impressed.

The 20 MB of RAM are plenty for all of my programs.

I like the snazzy Windows 3.1 interface. The high resolution 640x480 screen is really nice too.

This new browser "Netscape Navigator" is such a cool tool for surfing around on the "World Wide Web!"

I bet none of you have such a high spec laptop as this!

But I'm still waiting for The Universe is Toast to come out. DOOM was good, but has ID Software forgotten about Keen? I hope not!

Wow. I didn't even thought browsing the internet with such an ancient artifact would be possible. Well done!

I am indeed jealous of that amazing machine! I can't believe how fast technology is changing in this final decade of the century. Just last year I bought an IBM PS/1 486 at 50 MHz with 8 MB of RAM, but I see it is already obsolete. To think you have more power in something that can carry around! Perhaps if I had your machine I could run Jazz Jackrabbit...

Thankfully Keen runs well though, and since I got my Sound Blaster card I have really been enjoying the music! I also hope The Universe is Toast is on the way soon!

I have to post this and log off now, I need to make a phone call.

I have a similar spec model but the floppy drive is external and got knocked around a bit too much and doesn't seem to work any more. There is a removable CD drive where the floppy is on yours. Surely nobody will ever need that much space so it's highly superfluous, but the pins are vertical so the laptop still needs to be dismantled if I want to install a floppy drive in its place.

The sound chip also seems to have taken some damage during the last transit a few years ago. It's been put away to prevent further damage. Hopefully just some loose solder or something so one day I hope to fix it up again, along with the 386 boards floating around with battery acid damage. Still a very nice machine for QuickBASIC programming though.

Gee, you don't need to rub it in.

This is so cool! Now I am tempted to get Mom's old Windows 3.1 computer up next time I am home and see if it still works.

So last year, I got a new laptop, and my iPad, which I bought back in 2015, has at least 50 GB worth of music, and if I hook it up to the laptop to try and add anything to it, it is going to erase what I already have on there and replace it with whatever is in the iTunes directory of the current computer. What should I do? Any help?

your post is quite a bit off topic here, if not posted on the wrong forums. you might get better answers at a dedicated Apple/iPad forum. I have heard about such iTunes oddities before. so chances are good that the internet might know how to deal with that kind of issue.
first up I'd recommend doing a backup of you music collection. make sure that you don't use any iTunes tools, but instead manually copy and paste your music files over to an external hard drive, or a cloud service.
next up kick MacOS and install Linux... nah, just kidding.
